On the solemn occasion of the International Holodomor Commemoration Day, November 25, 2023, the Ukrainian community of Calgary congregated at St. Vladimir's Ukrainian Orthodox Sobor to pay homage to the victims of the Holodomor, a Genocide-Famine orchestrated by Joseph Stalin and the Soviet Union against the Ukrainian people. The event, marked by a sense of remembrance and reflection, brought together individuals of all ages to remember and commemorate these atrocities.

We were honoured to present an award from the Holodomor Research and Education Consortium to retired Calgary Board of Education teach, Mrs Pamela Clark, for her thoughtful and creative lesson plan about the Holodomor. Mayor Gondek and UCC Calgary President, Danylo Moussienko, awarded Mrs Clark with the HREC Educator Award for Holodomor Lesson Plan Development. We would like to once again congratulate Mrs Clark on her award! You can read more here, regarding the award and the award recipient.

We would like to thank the following individuals who spoke during the Commemoration:
- Member of Parliament, Mr Pat Kelly
- Member of Legislative Assemble, Hon. Mr Ric McIver
- Member of Legislative Assemble, Ms Janet Eremenko
- Mayor of Calgary. Jyotti Gondek
- Mrs Pamela Clark, recipient of the 2023 HREC Educator Award

Finally, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to all who participated in this gathering. Our sincere appreciation goes to St. Vladimir's Ukrainian Orthodox Sobor for graciously hosting this event, clergy from each Ukrainian parish in Calgary for leading the Prayer service, and CYM Calgary for providing decoration and informative placards, and League of Ukrainian Canadian Women for preparing the Hungry Lunch and an informational table about the Holodomor. We trust that this event has been both meaningful and valuable to each attendee.

We remind everyone that 90 years since the Holodomor, russia is once again weaponizing food against Ukraine in effort to exterminate the Ukrainian language, culture, and people. Please continue to support Ukraine.

Calgary Holodomor Commemoration 2020 |

30/11/2020

This year, November 28, 2020 is the National Holodomor Memorial Day in Canada and Alberta. We solemnly commemorate millions of victims of one of the most heinous crimes against humanity - man-made famine - the genocide of the Ukrainian people called Holodomor. The word Holodomor means to inflict death by starvation. Between 1932 and 1933, the Stalin communist regime orchestrated a famine-genocide to undermine Ukrainian nation, identity and spirit and ethnically cleanse Ukrainians from vast territories by starving millions of men, women and children. The horrendous atrocities were concealed and denied by Soviet Union and today are being denied by the Russian Federation. Putin regime not only denies the Soviet crimes, it continues the crimes against Ukraine through annexation of Crimea, political repressions, instigating the war in Eastern Ukraine with over 13 thousands killed, tens of thousands being injured and over a million who lost their homes. Today we lay a wreath in memory of millions of victims of a man-made famine genocide Holodomor, we light a candle and we continue raising awareness about the genocide, about communist crimes against Ukraine and today's Russian aggression. We thank Canada and Alberta for establishing the memorial day and recognizing the genocide.

Eternal Memory!
